JBL Backflow Safety Device for Air Pumps 4/6

The JBL backflow safety device protects devices such as diaphragm pumps from returning aquarium water.

The gas exchange in the aquarium takes place mainly via the surface movement of the water, in which atmospheric oxygen is introduced into the aquarium water. However, some factors significantly reduce the oxygen content in the aquarium: rising temperatures, lack of CO2 nighttime shutdowns, medications, and more.

In aquariums with little surface flow, a shortage can quickly develop here. The plant mass is also crucial: even if many plants produce vital oxygen during the day, they also exhale carbon dioxide at night because they do not undergo photosynthesis without light. Especially here, the use of an air pump can be advantageous to avoid unnecessary permanent pH fluctuations overnight, with which most fish have considerable difficulties. Due to the resulting water movement, the (excess) CO2 is actively expelled and atmospheric oxygen enters the aquarium water.

In general, all air pumps and compressors should be protected from returning water. For this purpose, the JBL backflow safety device was developed. This "valve" is simply integrated into the air-conducting hose. The arrow on the return valve indicates the installation direction as seen from the direction of the air pump.

In order to stop a possible water return at an early stage, the return valve should always be installed as close to the water surface as possible.

Note: Backflow preventions for air DO NOT work with CO2! Also, the return fuses for CO2 are not suitable for air lines, since the pressure of the air pump is not sufficient to open the CO2 return valve.
