Description

Tropic Marin's Phosphate-Test Professional is a test for determining the phosphate concentration in saltwater and freshwater aquariums. The kit includes all test cuvettes, reagents, dosing syringes and colour charts for precise and reliable measurements iin your own home. The reagents can be bought as refill packs after they have been used up.

Phosphate is an important nutrient

Phosphate is an extremely important plant nutrient and a vital mineral. It enters aquarium water naturally through the decomposition of waste, uneaten food or even during water treatment. Even small amounts of phosphate are sufficient for plants, but algae love it when it is available in excess concentrations.

The phosphate content in aquarium water must be checked regularly. Irregular water changes, uneaten food, the decomposition of plant residues and the digestion of fish increase phosphate levels which leads to algal blooms. However, if an aquarium is densely stocked, the aquarium inhabitants use up more of it which can lead to phosphate deficiencies.

The optimal phosphate content differs depending on the stock and water:

► A value of up to 0.4 mg/L phosphate is optimal in freshwater aquariums. A value above 1 mg/L phosphate is already too high and must be reduced. For aquatic plants, 0.02 mg/L phosphate is sufficient.

► Natural seawater has a phosphate content of approx. 0.06 mg/L. In coral reefs, this value is even lower, between 0.01 and 0.02 mg/L. Higher concentrations can have negative consequences on corals!

Instructions for use:

  1. Shake the dropper bottle vigorously before use. Assemble the comparator.
  2. Rinse the glass cuvettes first with tap water and then with aquarium water.
  3. Fill both glass cuvettes with 15 ml aquarium water with the dosing syringe. Set aside one of the water samples for reference.
  4. For freshwater: Add 12 drops of Reagent A to the test cuvette and close the cuvette with a stopper. Then gently shake the sample.
For salwater: Add 10 drops of Reagent A to the test cuvette and close the cuvette with a stopper. Then gently shake the sample.
  5. Add 3 drops of test reagent B to the sample, close the glass cuvette and shake it gently.
  6. Let the solution sit for 4 minutes. Place the opened test cuvette and the reference cuvette (with the water sample) in the comparator. Place the comparator on the colour chart so that the reference cuvette is on the colorued square and the test cuvette is on the white square.
  7. Compare the opposite fields by looking into the open cuvettes from above. Move the comparator on the colour chart until both cuvettes are the same colour.
  8. Read the measured phosphate value from the colour field. If the colours are not exactly the same, determine an intermediate value.
  9. Wash the glass cuvettes and syringe thoroughly with tap water after the measurement process if finished.
