Description

Tropic Marin's GH Test is a test to check the total hardness in freshwater aquariums. The test includes all the measuring devices and reagents required for around 100 applications. The reagents can be bought as refill packs after they have been used up.

What is Total Hardness (GH)?

Total hardness (GH) is the total amount of the alkaline earth ions (calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium) dissolved in the water. While barium and strontium only occur in traces, calcium and magnesium salts make up a significant part of aquarium salts. When these are present in small amounts, the water is soft. If they are present in larger quantities, the water is hard. The total hardness is measured in the degree of German hardness (°dH) - 1 °dH is equivalent to 10 mg/L of dissolved calcium oxide.

Since the concentration of the salts present in the water affects the vitality of the fish and the plants, the total hardness must be checked regularly. The optimal values for the total hardness depend on the fish stock. A desirable overall hardness in a freshwater aquarium is when the values are between 3 and 10 °dH.

Instructions for use:

  1. Shake the bottle before use.
  2. Rinse the glass cuvette first with tap water and then with aquarium water.
  3. Fill the glass cuvette with 5 ml of aquarium water. Use the dosing syringe for this.
  4. Add Reagent GH to the glass cuvette - drop by drop. After adding each drop, shake the glass cuvette - the solution will turn from red to green.
  5. The number of drops shows you the total hardness of the water - in °dH. As an example: 6 drops of reagent GH = 6 °dH.
  6. If you want to make the measurement more precise, you can use 10 ml of water sample instead of 5 ml. Then the measurement is as follows: 1 drop = 0.5 °dH. As an example: 6 drops = 3 °dH.
  7. Rinse the glass cuvette and syringe with tap water.

Included in the kit:

  • 1 x 20ml Reagent GH
  • 1 x 10ml glass cuvette
  • 1 x 5ml dosing syringe
  • 1 x instruction manual

Our expert Oliver Knott recommends:

Water parameters should be kept as stable as possible. Fluctuations of water parameters lead to unnecessary stress and should therefore be checked regularly.
